About the position

The Digital Printing Technician at Vanderbilt University is responsible for coordinating and executing various printing activities within a print shop or copy center environment. This role emphasizes customer service, ensuring that clients receive high-quality printed materials while maintaining a friendly and helpful demeanor. The technician will manage electronic files, operate high-volume digital printers, and perform document finishing tasks, all while adhering to safety protocols and quality control procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Operate high-volume digital printers and scanners
  • Set up, print, and finish large-format projects
  • Cross-trained in printing, finishing, and engraving
  • Review and prepare incoming electronic files for printing and mailing, assisting clients in data conversion and file submission
  • Order routine supplies using purchase orders
  • Manage electronic files and documents received from customers or internal stakeholders
  • Prepare print files for optimal output, including tasks such as imposition, color management, and file conversion
  • Set up printing equipment and perform test prints to ensure proper configuration
  • Operate digital printing presses, copiers, and other production equipment to produce high-quality printed materials
  • Perform document finishing tasks such as cutting, binding, laminating, and packaging
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area to support efficient printing operations
  • Troubleshoot printing issues and perform minor equipment maintenance and repairs
  • Provide customer service and run point of sale register in retail environment
  • Communicate effectively with customers, co-workers, and management to understand requirements and provide updates
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and quality control procedures
  • May be responsible for visiting clients and potential clients to promote services and improve communication
  • May be responsible for completing Printing Services job tickets, including trimming and folding
  • May be responsible for shipping job tickets by packaging product and printing delivery slips
  • May involve lead responsibility for student employees

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required
  • 1-2 years of experience in a digital printing or copy center environment is required
  • Fluency in Adobe Illustrator and InDesign is required
  • Proficiency in using various print software, RIPs, and file preparation tools is required
  • Skilled in operating digital printing presses, copiers, and finishing equipment
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Comfort with technology and applying it to solve problems
  • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or services ordering and inventory control
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports
  • Demonstrated problem analysis and solution skills
  • Proficiency in creating, composing, and editing written materials
  • Organizing and coordinating abilities
  • Knowledge of general accounting principles
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds on a regular basis
