About the position

The Director, Accounting Policy at Marriott Vacations Worldwide (MVW) is a pivotal role responsible for interpreting and applying accounting policies and practices as dictated by regulatory agencies and standard setters globally. This position requires continuous monitoring of emerging financial, accounting, and reporting issues, preparing preliminary conclusions on their impacts to MVW. The Director will collaborate closely with the Vice President of Financial Reporting to assess these issues, determining their potential effects on MVW's operations and both internal and external reporting. This role is highly visible to executive management and necessitates the development and maintenance of strong relationships with key stakeholder groups to ensure effective communication and collaboration. In this role, the Director will lead consultations on various business transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, asset sales, and entity structuring, identifying and addressing accounting policy and reporting issues. The Director will research complex technical accounting literature, apply technical standards to business issues, and facilitate discussions with external auditors and internal finance teams. This includes creating technical accounting memos and documenting decisions reached, ensuring compliance with new accounting requirements while minimizing disruption to daily operations. The Director will also be responsible for operationalizing recently issued accounting guidance, staying updated on existing and emerging financial accounting principles, and advising stakeholders on their applicability to MVW. This position will contribute to the development of enterprise policies that support a strong internal control environment and ensure senior management is informed of current and pending changes to accounting policies. The Director will also lead documentation of quarterly reporting matters and assist with XBRL tagging as needed, providing expert consultation on financial data interpretation and MVW's accounting policies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead consultation on business transactions such as mergers and acquisitions, addressing accounting policy and reporting issues.
  • Research complex technical accounting literature and apply technical standards to business issues.
  • Facilitate discussions with external auditors and internal finance teams, creating technical accounting memos and documenting decisions.
  • Provide accounting conclusions on various matters identified within the Accounting Policy group and others associated with MVW.
  • Participate in the operationalization of recently issued accounting guidance, ensuring compliance while minimizing disruption.
  • Stay abreast of existing and emerging financial accounting principles, advising stakeholders on their applicability to MVW.
  • Contribute to the development of discipline and enterprise policies that facilitate a strong internal control environment.
  • Ensure senior management is updated on current and pending changes to accounting policies.
  • Collaborate in implementing new accounting pronouncements as requested by the Vice President, Financial Reporting.
  • Lead documentation of quarterly reporting matters and assist with XBRL tagging as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance or related discipline required.
  • MBA or Master of Science Degree in Accounting, Finance or related discipline preferred.
  • CPA license required.
  • 7+ years professional accounting experience, including work with a large, accelerated SEC registrant or public accounting experience.
  • Experience analyzing and recommending strategies for complex real estate, joint venture, merger & acquisition, and tax transactions.
  • Thorough knowledge of audit procedures and techniques used to examine financial records.
  • Expert knowledge in generally accepted accounting principles and controls.
  • Strong business acumen and service orientation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Lodging/timeshare/hospitality industry experience preferred.
