About the position

The Climate Risk Director role at MetLife is a pivotal position within the Global Risk Management (GRM) team, which is dedicated to overseeing both financial and non-financial risks to support responsible growth and ensure the company fulfills its commitments to customers. The Climate Risk team specifically focuses on developing and enhancing climate risk capabilities across MetLife, which includes identifying, analyzing, and managing climate-related risks. This role is essential for the ongoing development of MetLife's climate risk capabilities, particularly in relation to investments. In this position, the Climate Risk Director will be responsible for designing, implementing, and executing enterprise-wide analyses and assessments of climate risks. This includes acting as a subject matter expert on climate risk management, staying informed about industry news, regulations, peer activities, and disclosures, and actively participating in the creation of company disclosures. The role requires collaboration across the enterprise to integrate climate risk into the overall risk management framework, ensuring that MetLife is well-prepared to address the challenges posed by climate change. Successful candidates will utilize their skills in relationship building, professional communication, risk management, qualitative analysis, and strategic vision to effectively execute the analysis and reporting of climate risk program activities. They will engage with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders, ensuring that MetLife remains at the forefront of climate risk management in the financial sector.

Responsibilities

  • Support the development and implementation of an analytical framework for assessing climate risks across MetLife
  • Monitor regulations and financial industry standards, including best practices, climate risk scenarios and measurement approaches
  • Support global coordination and climate risk-related reporting, including drafting responses to external requests and developing action plans
  • Contribute to the design of climate risk scenario analysis and/or stress testing capabilities
  • Perform analysis of climate risks on MetLife's investment portfolio
  • Assist in developing approaches to other sustainability-related risk management policies and procedures
  • Support preparation of materials for senior staff and key stakeholders
  • Work independently on complex and/or important risk management projects
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Finance or analytical field
  • 5+ years relevant working experience in financial services or insurance
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with a practical solutions-driven approach
  • Ability to multitask effectively in a high-volume and complex environment with changing priorities
  • Understanding of investment products (e.g., bonds, bank loans, commercial and residential mortgages, structured products)
  • Strong business acumen
  • Ability to condense internal and external data into clear, actionable insights
  • Genuine interest in understanding how climate change impacts business, particularly the financial sector
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with members of other departments and lines of business
  • Strong technical skills using Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, with the ability to quickly learn new tools and platforms.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with existing frameworks and increasing regulatory expectations with respect to climate and/or sustainability risks
  • Advanced degree (e.g., MBA or law degree or master's degree in finance, Accounting or Economics)
  • Professional designation is preferred (CFA, FRM, CPA, etc.)
  • Prior asset management, risk management or climate risk experience
  • Quantitative skills and experience analyzing/modeling large data sets.
