About the position

The Director, Communications at the Council on Foundations is responsible for leading and executing the organization's external communications strategy. This role involves managing media relations, overseeing executive communications, and ensuring consistent messaging across various platforms. The Director will also supervise an Associate, Communications, and work closely with the Vice President of Communications and Content to enhance the Council's public presence and advocacy efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Design, lead, and execute a communications strategy with measurable goals and outcomes.
  • Manage all aspects of media relations and public relations, including press releases and building relationships with journalists.
  • Oversee executive communications and thought leadership initiatives.
  • Lead sector coordination on high-priority topics and campaigns.
  • Ensure the Council's style, brand voice, and messaging are consistent and forward-thinking.
  • Act as an ambassador for the Council's Better Stories, Better Language portfolio.
  • Build and maintain a story database reflecting best practices and key issues.
  • Drive projects to completion as a project manager.
  • Train staff, board, and partners to ensure consistent messaging across the Council.

Requirements

  • Ten (10) years of directly related experience in communications, public relations, or public affairs.
  • Two (2) years of experience leading an organization's external communications function.
  • Two (2) years of experience in an advocacy, legislative, or policy-making environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience preparing press materials and speeches.
  • Experience building media relationships and responding to press requests.
  • Strong project management and analytical skills.
  • Experience supervising and coaching junior and mid-level staff.
  • Experience using web content management systems, preferably Drupal.
  • Experience using marketing platforms, preferably Hubspot, Constant Contact, or Mailchimp.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience or ability to use CRM database solutions, preferably Salesforce.
  • Proficient skill in Microsoft Office 365 applications.

Benefits

  • Remote work flexibility with 10% travel required.
  • Salary range of $132,000 - $142,000 for Washington DC/DMV area candidates.
