About the position

The Director of Market Segment Finance at Highmark Health is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing the financial operations of a specific business segment within the organization. This position entails a comprehensive approach to managing direct operating expenses and appraising operating results in relation to costs, budgets, operational policies, and trends, with a keen focus on identifying opportunities for increased profitability. The Director will collaborate closely with segment and matrix partner leaders to ensure the achievement of both current year and multi-year financial commitments, thereby playing a crucial role in the financial health of the company. In this capacity, the Director will perform various management responsibilities, which include hiring and termination decisions, coaching and development of staff, performance management, and ensuring staff productivity. The role requires planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling the day-to-day operations of the finance department. The Director will also be responsible for developing and implementing necessary policies and programs, potentially holding budgetary authority. As a key member of the team, the Director will contribute to the development of the vision and strategy for the business segment, providing detailed guidance on the preparation of all financial components of strategic plans. This includes overseeing the communication of strategy and vision to management, staff, and company representatives. The Director will maintain financial records, prepare financial statements, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, including the preparation of statutory reports for submission to the Department of Insurance in various states. Additionally, the Director will lead initiatives aimed at improving earnings across all Profit & Loss categories, partner with actuarial functions for effective product pricing, and oversee compliance matters related to product filings and regulatory inquiries. The role also involves ensuring that business initiatives are well-documented and that measurable success criteria are integrated into current and multi-year budgets and projections. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the financial operations of a business segment within the company.
  • Support direct operating expense oversight of the department.
  • Appraise operating results in terms of costs, budgets, operational policies, trends, and profit opportunities.
  • Partner with segment and matrix leaders to drive financial commitments.

  • Partner with actuarial functions for product pricing and claim analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory matters and product filings.
  • Document business cases for initiatives and integrate success criteria into budgets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of progressive management experience in finance or accounting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the healthcare payer sector.
  • CPA certification.
