About the position

The Director of Accounting and Finance at El Camino Real Charter High School is responsible for overseeing the organization's accounting, payroll, and procurement processes, as well as managing the transition to new accounting systems. This role requires staying updated on financial developments and demonstrating thought leadership in accounting activities. The Director will also oversee cost and general accounting, accounts receivable, and collections, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional level accounting functions according to generally accepted accounting principles and local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Develop and maintain the school's cost accounting system to allocate direct and support costs by function.
  • Verify receipts and disbursements in the school's bank accounts and reconcile them to the school's financial records.
  • Investigate and resolve financial issues, errors, and discrepancies.
  • Develop and implement procedures to ensure adequate cash controls.
  • Prepare and maintain the school's annual chart of accounts.
  • Compile and analyze various financial reports, statements, and records, including the school's Form 990, Local Control Accountability Plan, Budget and Interim Financial Reports, and monthly financial board reports.
  • Establish and oversee year-end financial close process and monthly/quarterly reconciliations.
  • Prepare accounting entries to ensure accurate year-end financial reporting.
  • Interface with the school's independent audit firm to ensure accurate preparation of year-end financial statements and other reports.
  • Assist the Chief Business Officer in budget maintenance and monitoring.
  • Maintain account budgets by department and funding source, preparing monthly budget transfers and revisions.
  • Prepare and submit all financial reports for the school in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Review and prepare related financial reports relating to the school's ASB.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a closely related field required.
  • A minimum of three years of increasingly responsible experience in accounting or finance required.
  • Knowledge of California School Accounting Code Structure (SACS), the School Accounting Manual (CSAM), and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with non-profit organization financial statement and tax return preparation.
  • Familiarity with state and federal program record-keeping rules and requirements.
  • Understanding of position control and best practices for budget preparation and monitoring in a K-12 school setting.
  • Experience working within a charter or private school environment preferred.
