About the position

The Director of Finance at Disability Rights California (DRC) plays a crucial role in managing the financial activities of the organization, which advocates for the rights of individuals with disabilities. This position is responsible for leading the Accounting team and ensuring the efficient operation of the Accounting Department, which handles complex grant accounting and various financial functions. The Director will collaborate closely with the Executive Director, Associate Executive Directors, and the Board of Directors to develop annual budgets, monitor fiscal performance, and conduct financial forecasting and planning. Additionally, the Director will oversee external audits, including the annual financial audit and 401k audit, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements. In this hands-on role, the Director of Finance must possess a deep understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and non-profit accounting practices. The position requires a high level of accuracy, conscientiousness, and timeliness in executing job responsibilities. The Director will be responsible for hiring, supervising, and evaluating accounting personnel, fostering a collaborative and high-performance team environment. The role also involves overseeing all accounting functions, including payroll, accounts payable, cash management, and financial reporting, while ensuring adherence to internal controls and regulatory standards. The Director of Finance will prepare timely financial reports for internal and external stakeholders, manage the agency's budget, and ensure that all financial records are maintained in accordance with GAAP. This position is essential for supporting the organization's mission to empower individuals with disabilities and ensure they are treated with dignity and respect. The Director will also engage in cross-departmental projects and initiatives, contributing to the overall strategic direction of DRC.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Accounting team, including hiring, supervising, and evaluating staff.
  • Oversee all functions of the Accounting Department, ensuring compliance with accounting policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and monitor the agency budget and fiscal projections in collaboration with the Associate Executive Director of Finance and Administration.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management functions.
  • Manage the annual financial audit and 401k audit, including preparation of necessary documentation.
  • Develop and implement accounting policies and procedures to meet current and future business needs.
  • Prepare timely financial reports for internal and external stakeholders, maintaining supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate the physical inventory of assets and ensure compliance with grant/contract guidelines.
  • Support the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors and collaborate with other Administration Directors on cross-team projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of ten years of experience as a Finance Director in a non-profit organization.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting and finance principles, with at least five years of supervisory experience.
  • Expertise in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and compliance regulations for the non-profit sector.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively at all levels.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience in strategic financial planning and operational modeling.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial modeling.
  • Experience with financial and payroll systems, and sensitivity to the needs of persons with disabilities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Ten years of experience as a Finance Director or Controller.
  • Experience with non-profit fund accounting and Abila MIP Fund Accounting Software.
  • Familiarity with Paylocity payroll and HRIS systems.
