About the position

The Director of Finance at the American Swedish Institute (ASI) will lead the financial strategies and operations of the organization, ensuring its long-term financial stability while supporting its mission of cultural education and engagement. This full-time position requires a strategic financial leader who is passionate about culture and community, and it involves overseeing all aspects of accounting and finance, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting. The role is crucial for collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting financial insights to the leadership team and Board of Trustees.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute ASI's financial strategy.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance program performance.
  • Participate in institutional strategic planning.
  • Provide financial counsel to leadership team, staff, and Board of Trustees.
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
  • Manage investment portfolio and endowments.
  • Lead the annual audit process and tax compliance.
  • Implement financial technologies and best practices.
  • Hire, train, and mentor accounting staff.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and professional development.
  • Present financial reports to leadership team and Board of Trustees.
  • Manage relationships with external financial partners.
  • Ensure compliance with funding source requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
  • 5+ years of progressive financial management experience.
  • Experience with complex nonprofit organizations.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Comprehensive understanding of financial operations (audits, budgeting, AP/AR, GL, payroll, investments).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, advanced Excel, and cloud-based financial systems.
  • Knowledge of data analytics for financial decision-making.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills, especially in explaining complex financial concepts.
  • Collaborative approach to financial management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Active or inactive CPA license.
  • Experience with fund and grant accounting.
  • Familiarity with CRM databases.
