About the position

The Director of Finance at the Hispanic Society Museum & Library is responsible for managing a $7 million operating budget and overseeing all finance, accounting, auditing, and board reporting activities. This role involves developing and implementing best practices, ensuring compliance with GAAP standards, and maintaining effective financial operations. The Director will work closely with the Finance and Audit Committees of the Board of Trustees and supervise the Business Manager and part-time controller.

Responsibilities

• Manage the $7 million operating budget and oversee all finance and accounting activities.
• Develop and implement best practices for financial operations and audits.
• Prepare, administer, and review all financial plans, comparing them to actual results.
• Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with GAAP standards.
• Analyze financial data and present accurate financial reports to senior leadership.
• Oversee annual audits and tax filings, ensuring compliance with regulations.
• Manage payroll processing and ensure adherence to accounts payable processes.
• Collaborate with department managers to assess financial efficacy of programs and events.
• Develop budgets for capital expenditure projects and manage cash flow forecasting.
• Interface with external auditors and coordinate audit activities.

Requirements

• Minimum of a BA; MBA preferred.
• 7-10 years of accounting and finance management experience in a non-profit environment.
• Strong understanding of accounting principles and GAAP standards.
• Demonstrated success in leading financial and business operations.
• Solid experience in audit coordination, budget development, and financial reporting.
• Experience with grants management and compliance reporting.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in a museum or cultural institution.
• Advanced skills in Excel for planning and analysis.
• Strong PowerPoint skills for presentations.
