About the position

Pierce County is looking for a dedicated Finance Director who has deep knowledge of public sector financial management, including budgeting, accounting, investments, procurement processes, and compliance with federal, state, and local laws. The ideal candidate will be skilled in leading teams, implementing fiscal controls, navigating procurement strategies, and making sound, independent decisions on complex financial challenges. Proficiency in analyzing economic trends, managing County assets, and aligning financial and procurement strategies with organizational goals and evolving fiscal conditions is essential. The candidate should also possess a strong ability to convey complex financial and procurement matters clearly and engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Finance Department in effective management of resources throughout Pierce County government.
  • Oversee financial planning, budgeting, performance management, revenue and expenditure management, and preparation of financial reports.
  • Act as treasurer for numerous outside taxing districts.
  • Manage requests for proposals, bid opportunities, goods and services procurement, and contract compliance monitoring.
  • Handle contract reviews, investigate claims and lawsuits, and oversee settlement or denial processes to protect County interests.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year educational institution with major coursework in business or public administration, finance, accounting, or related discipline applicable to the requirements of the position.
  • Six years of progressively responsible professional finance or accounting experience, including familiarity with public sector budgeting, accounting, purchasing, revenue collection or fund investment.
  • Four years in an administrative or managerial capacity.
