The Director of Philanthropy for the College of Arts and Sciences at Oakland University is a pivotal role responsible for leading fundraising initiatives and managing relationships with high-capacity donors. The Director will work closely with various stakeholders, including the Senior Director of Philanthropy, the Associate Vice President of Philanthropy, and school-based development officers, to align fundraising efforts with the college's strategic direction, particularly in the hard sciences such as biology and mathematics. In this role, the Director will manage a portfolio of prospects and donors, conducting activities that lead to successful fundraising outcomes. The position demands excellent communication skills, both written and oral, as the Director will interact with corporate executives, foundation officers, and other high-capacity donors. The ability to analyze and organize fundraising data effectively is crucial, as is a thorough understanding of the major gifts fundraising process and planned giving. The Director will also be responsible for engaging and working with fundraising volunteers, ensuring that they are effectively utilized in the fundraising process. This role is essential in fostering a culture of philanthropy within the college and enhancing the overall fundraising strategy of Oakland University. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in development and fundraising, preferably within a collegiate or university setting, and will be committed to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion that Oakland University upholds.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the fundraising process for an assigned portfolio of prospects and donors.
  • Conduct activities leading to gifts of $25,000 and above for identified goals and programs.
  • Work cooperatively with the Senior Director of Philanthropy and other key stakeholders.
  • Engage and work with fundraising volunteers effectively.
  • Analyze and organize fundraising data to inform strategy.
  • Communicate effectively with high-capacity donors and prospects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in development and fundraising.
  • Demonstrated success in obtaining gifts of $25,000 and above.
  • Experience working with fundraising volunteers.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of the major gifts fundraising process and understanding of planned giving.
  • Knowledge of computer and databases related to development and fundraising activities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree.
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive certification.
