Claremont McKenna College (CMC), a premier liberal arts college and member of the prestigious Claremont Colleges, is seeking an energetic and innovative leader to serve as the next Director of the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, commonly referred to as the Ath. This unique program in American higher education is centered around the Ath Speaker Series, which invites distinguished scholars, public figures, thought leaders, artists, and innovators to engage with the CMC community. The Director plays a crucial role in promoting intellectual growth, artistic and cultural appreciation, and the College's commitments to free expression, viewpoint diversity, and constructive dialogue. This position offers an unparalleled opportunity to enhance civil discourse through undergraduate education. The Ath, established in 1970, is a vital part of CMC's academic and co-curricular life. The Director serves as a senior campus leader, reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty (VPAA/DOF). This role involves regular collaboration with the College President and engagement with alumni, parents, and members of the Board of Trustees, as well as daily interactions with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds. Many students view the Ath as a second home, and the Director acts as both a formal and informal mentor. By fostering deep connections within the campus community, the Director will gain insights into the intellectual and cultural climate of the campus, enabling the creation of compelling programs that advance campus conversations and prepare students for responsible leadership across various industries.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning and execution of the Ath Speaker Series and other intellectual programming.
  • Foster a culture of civil discourse and open inquiry within the campus community.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to develop programs that enhance the educational experience.
  • Manage budget operations, including monitoring and tracking expenditures.
  • Engage with alumni, parents, and trustees to promote the Ath and its initiatives.
  • Serve as a mentor to students, providing guidance and support in their academic and personal development.
  • Promote the values of inclusion, social warmth, and community building within the Ath and the broader campus.

Requirements

  • Minimum of three years' experience in leading academic or intellectual programming.
  • Familiarity with a liberal arts educational setting.
  • Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; terminal degree preferred.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Goal-oriented management skills with the ability to work collaboratively with student employees and volunteers.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and high social energy to interface with diverse community members.
  • Excellent communication skills in various media, with the ability to listen for both content and emotion.
  • Ability to manage budget operations effectively.
  • Skill in filtering effective strategies and ideas with tact.
