About the position

The Warden at Southwestern Illinois Correctional Center plays a crucial role in overseeing the operations and programs of the facility. This position involves formulating and implementing policies, managing staff, and ensuring compliance with regulations while maintaining a secure environment for both employees and individuals in custody. The Warden is responsible for the overall administration of the facility, including budget management, program evaluation, and staff development, making it a pivotal leadership role within the Department of Corrections.

Responsibilities

  • Formulates and implements rules, regulations, directives, policies, and procedures governing employees and individuals in custody.
  • Plans and directs overall operations, programs, and activities of the facility.
  • Directs pivotal employees in assigned areas to ensure efficient operation of the institution.
  • Applies preventive security measures enforcing policy and procedures to avoid potentially threatening issues.
  • Directs and evaluates program responsibility and monitors for effective operation of the facility.
  • Coordinates and evaluates programs, security, and custodial measures.
  • Pursues ongoing compliance with existing administrative directives and department rules.
  • Plans and directs facility budget and reviews fiscal responsibility of expenditures and resources.
  • Establishes standards for safekeeping and guarantee of individuals in custody trust funds and other funds within the facility.
  • Consults with court officials, law enforcement personnel, and other agencies regarding care and custody of individuals in custody.
  • Represents the Department of Corrections in communicating with the media.
  • Complies with laws cited by the State of Illinois in the operation of the facility.
  • Certifies legal decrees are implemented per court order.
  • Serves as a full-line supervisor, assigning and reviewing work, providing guidance and training to staff, and counseling regarding work performance.
  • Establishes annual goals and objectives, approves time off, and adjusts first-level grievances.
  • Effectively recommends and imposes discipline up to and including discharge, prepares and signs performance evaluations, and determines staffing needs.
  • Completes inspections of the overall physical plant, equipment, and grounds for safety, security, sanitation, efficiency, maintenance, and operational effectiveness.
  • Makes recommendations and certifies follow-up for corrective action.
  • Directs development of facility new construction and renovation of existing plant and capital projects.
  • Travels to speak before civic groups and organizations to discuss programs of the facility and Department of Corrections.

Requirements

  • Knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, preferably with courses in law enforcement, criminology, penology, or a related field.
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in a law enforcement public or private organization, a correctional facility, or related field.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Ability to qualify with firearms within twelve months of start date, and annually thereafter in accordance with agency directive and state or federal laws.
  • Completion of a background check and self-disclosure of criminal history.
  • Ability to pass a drug screen and be on-call.
  • Ability to use agency technology/equipment properly in accordance with information security awareness policies and confidentiality guidelines.
