About the position

As an E&S Casualty Underwriter at Munich Re Specialty Group, you will play a crucial role in the production, underwriting, and retention of profitable excess and surplus (E&S) business. This position is based in Atlanta, GA, but the company is open to considering candidates from various locations including Boston, Chicago, Hartford, New York City, Princeton NJ, and Philadelphia. Munich Re Specialty North America provides extensive specialty property and casualty insurance solutions through select brokers, Managing General Agents, program administrators, cover holders, and insurtech partners. In this role, you will be responsible for cultivating and maintaining broker relationships, which are essential for the success of the E&S team. You will underwrite, market, quote, bind, and retain a profitable book of E&S business that aligns with profitability and growth targets. Operating within granted authority and allocated catastrophe budgets, you will also make referrals to underwriting leadership as necessary. Your responsibilities will include the development and execution of production strategies and business plans aimed at maximizing growth objectives and rate goals. Collaboration with other Munich Re business units is encouraged to provide holistic solutions to clients. You will measure and optimize portfolio progress by reviewing and analyzing underwriting data, monitoring industry best practices, and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement. Additionally, you will represent the Munich Re brand at client events, seminars, and meetings, while assisting in day-to-day operations and projects that may impact clients, business groups, divisions, and corporate objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite, market, quote, bind and retain a profitable book of excess and surplus lines business that meets profitability and growth targets.
  • Operate within granted authority and allocated catastrophe budgets and make referrals to underwriting leadership as appropriate.
  • Develop and execute production strategies and business plans to implement and maximize growth objectives and rate goals.
  • Coordinate with other Munich Re business units to offer the best holistic solutions to clients.
  • Measure and optimize portfolio progress by reviewing and analyzing underwriting data and monitoring industry best practices to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Cultivate and maintain professional wholesale broker relationships.
  • Represent the Munich Re brand and Munich Re Specialty Insurance at client events, seminars, meetings, etc.
  • Assist in day-to-day operations and projects as assigned which could have client, business group, divisional and corporate impact.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience in insurance and/or reinsurance with production underwriting experience preferably at an E&S carrier for Casualty lines.
  • Excellent underwriting, marketing, and analytical skills.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Commercial P&C / E&S products and insurance concepts, underwriting processes and procedures, laws and regulations, terminology, concepts, and principles related to strategic planning, and other relevant industry trends.
  • Working knowledge of catastrophe models including RMS.
  • Successful track record of developing and maintaining strong relationships with wholesale brokers.
  • Tech savviness and a willingness to experiment with and learn new technologies.
  • Ability to think strategically and function tactically.
  • Exceptional communication skills that energize and engage brokers, clients, and colleagues.
  • Ability to present and negotiate complex agreements with brokers.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
