About the position

The Education Specialist position at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) focuses on providing direct services to underrepresented, minority, and first-generation youth and adults in their pursuit of higher education and career preparation. This role involves organizing educational workshops, career advising, and chaperoning field trips, while collaborating with local colleges and community organizations to enhance college and career access opportunities. The position is integral to the Wisconsin Educational Opportunities Program (WEOP) and aims to empower students through various educational enrichment activities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct services to WEOP program participants.
  • Assist underrepresented, minority, and/or first-generation youth and adults in pursuing higher education and career preparation.
  • Organize and chaperone field trips to college campuses and cultural enrichment centers.
  • Collaborate with local colleges, school staff, and community organizations to increase college and career access opportunities.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of student tutoring/mentoring programs.
  • Compile, organize, and disseminate relevant information to students, parents, and community resources.
  • Develop a network of resources and attend related meetings, workshops, and conferences.
  • Monitor, manage, and compile records and data via databases and MS Office.
  • Assist in grant writing and reporting for educational programs.
  • Develop and conduct workshops on college and career readiness.

Requirements

  • Experience managing a caseload.
  • Experience recruiting students for programs.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, including underrepresented and ethnic/racial minority students.
  • Experience with TRIO and/or GEAR UP programs (preferred).
  • Experience developing or presenting trainings/presentations/workshops on education topics.
  • Experience counseling underrepresented or minority students/parents on college and career readiness or financial aid processes.
  • Experience in grant writing or reporting (preferred).
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish or in English and Hmong (preferred).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with TRIO and/or GEAR UP programs.
  • Developing or presenting trainings/presentations/workshops on education topics.
  • Counseling underrepresented or minority students/parents on college and career readiness or financial aid processes.
  • Grant writing or reporting experience.
