About the position

The Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer at Domtar is responsible for providing engineering expertise to address and resolve issues related to mill electrical and control systems. This role involves developing project scopes, estimating costs, engineering, procuring, and installing new equipment or modifying existing systems. The engineer will also provide technical support to maintenance and operations personnel to ensure the proper functioning of equipment. The position is critical in managing projects effectively while adhering to budget constraints and timelines. The engineer will manage assigned projects by developing scopes, estimating costs, and engineering specifications while ensuring that project costs and implementation timelines are met. Regular interaction with maintenance and operations teams is essential to assist them in utilizing new equipment and the existing electrical distribution and process control systems. Additionally, the engineer will supervise contractors and consultants to ensure the safe installation of new equipment and modifications to existing systems, all while maintaining budgets and schedules. This role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving, particularly during equipment installations and unexpected shutdowns. The engineer must be able to quickly identify issues, implement corrective actions, and facilitate a safe and effective return to normal operations. The position also has a significant impact on the operating budget through cost reductions and process improvements, directly influencing the efficiency and productivity of the mill.

Responsibilities

  • Manage assigned projects through scope development, estimating costs, engineering, developing specifications and equipment identification while meeting the project costs and implementation time.
  • Assist maintenance and operations in the use of new equipment and the existing mill electrical distribution system and process control systems.
  • Supervise contractors and consultants to provide a safe installation of new equipment and/or modification of existing equipment while maintaining budgets and schedules.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering is required.
  • Good knowledge of most processes in the paper/pulp industry.
  • Ability to communicate ideas with others.
  • Thorough knowledge of process/electrical control systems and all the instrumentation utilized to implement them.
  • Experience with Allen Bradley PLCs, MCCs, and VFDs is very desirable.
  • Willingness to teach others to promote their effectiveness to Domtar.
