About the position

The Emergency Communications Specialist I position is a critical role within the City of Murfreesboro, TN, focusing on public safety telecommunications. This position is classified as Safety-Sensitive, meaning that candidates who successfully navigate the interview process will be required to undergo drug and alcohol testing. The primary responsibility of the Emergency Communications Specialist I is to serve as a Public Safety Telecommunicator, handling both 911 emergency and non-emergency calls. This role demands a calm demeanor and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals who may be experiencing extreme distress. The specialist must gather pertinent information from callers, accurately assess the nature and urgency of the situation, and provide appropriate assistance in accordance with established operational policies and protocols. In this role, the specialist will be responsible for answering emergency calls, determining the type and location of emergencies, and entering information into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. The position requires proficiency in various communication methods, including telephone and telecommunication devices for the deaf (TDD). Additionally, the specialist will perform data entry and verification through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) for outstanding warrants and other relevant information. The role also involves notifying other city departments and public utilities about emergency situations and providing assistance to the public as needed. The position requires attendance at training sessions and the ability to work various shifts, including rotating and odd schedules, based on staffing needs. The Emergency Communications Specialist I must attain the necessary training and certification within the first twelve months of employment, and failure to do so may result in termination. The role is physically demanding, requiring the ability to stand or walk for extended periods and perform keyboard operations while managing constant mental demands.

Responsibilities

  • Answer 911 emergency and non-emergency telephone calls to assist citizens and visitors.
  • Gather information from callers to accurately determine the type, location, and extent of emergency situations.
  • Assist with handling unusual and irregular calls, coding all calls for services appropriately.
  • Accurately enter information received into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
  • Utilize various methods of communication including telephone and TDD to assist callers.
  • Perform data entry and verification through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).
  • Notify other city departments and public utilities concerning emergency situations.
  • Attend training sessions as required to maintain certification and skills.
  • Provide information and assistance to members of the public.
  • Make appropriate contact with other departments, agencies, and businesses for needed assistance.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English.
  • Must submit to and pass an audiogram upon offer of employment.
  • Must pass a physical examination by a licensed physician upon offer of employment.
  • Ability to work different assigned shifts and days off as needed.
  • Must attain Emergency Communications Specialist I training and certification within twelve months of employment.
  • Must possess adequate eyesight to read TDD and various computer printouts.
  • Must have fingerprints on file with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Nice-to-haves
