About the position

The M IC ENERGY CONTRACT MANAGEMENT Department of the M RENEWABLE ACQUISITION Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional) This position manages the functions and activities for the development, evaluation, negotiation, and administration of energy power purchase agreements under the Energy Contract Management Department. This includes competitive bidding, feed-in tariff, bilateral negotiations, etc. for Oahu, Hawaii Island, and Maui County. The role involves managing policies with currently contracted Independent Power Producers, Cogenerators, and Qualifying Facilities for these regions. The individual will serve as the team lead for multi-disciplinary groups for the development and evaluation of energy purchase proposals and function as the lead negotiator for the company.

Responsibilities

  • Negotiate and administer power purchase agreements between Independent Power Producers, Co-generators, and Qualifying Facilities for Oahu, Hawaii Island, and Maui County.
  • Ensure consistent interpretation, strict compliance, and proper administration of all power purchase agreements.
  • Justify terms and conditions of power purchase agreements including capacity charges, energy charges, penalties/incentives, and methodologies of payment.
  • Review and approve all monthly payments in accordance with executed purchase power agreements.
  • Direct liaison activities with Independent Power Producers on operational matters during abnormal operating conditions.
  • Negotiate priorities with and support completion of project tasks through project team members and consultants.
  • Plan, develop, and coordinate the acquisition of renewable energy resources through requests for proposals and power purchase contract negotiations.
  • Lead cross-functional work teams in the evaluation and negotiation of renewable purchased power proposals.
  • Develop, review, and deliver planning/engineering-type expert testimony and presentations supporting power purchase agreements.
  • Participate in Company emergency response activities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in engineering and/or business principles.
  • Working knowledge of Renewable Energy technologies and their utility scale applications.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in power system planning, design, or operations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and collaborative skills.
  • Strong negotiating, influencing, and persuading techniques.
  • Analytical, organizational, and conceptual skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • 1-2 years of experience in evaluating and negotiating energy power purchase proposals.
  • Experience in preparing and providing testimony before public agencies.
  • Understanding of generation resource planning methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of budgeting/forecast process.
