About the position

The Engineering I position at Spire Inc. is a vital role within the Construction Engineering team, primarily assisting the Engineering Manager and Field Operations. This position is responsible for the design and estimation of construction projects aimed at replacing existing natural gas facilities and constructing new ones. The role requires close coordination with various departments, including GIS Analysts, Environmental Engineering, System Planning, Right of Way, Pipeline Safety and Compliance, Field Operations, and external companies to ensure that all projects are executed efficiently and in compliance with relevant regulations. The individual in this role will track and record each set of improvement plans from the preliminary stages through to final construction. They will assist in daily coordination and assignment of work to GIS Analysts and Construction Engineers, ensuring that all tasks are completed on time and to the required standards. The position also involves working on special projects, such as bridge and railroad crossings, and designing non-standard services for unique buildings. Additionally, the role requires the specification and ordering of non-stock materials necessary for various main and service works, as well as reviewing design and cost estimates to justify proposed main work. The Engineering I will handle communications regarding the status of jobs and projects, prepare necessary paperwork in accordance with company procedures, and attend utility and pre-construction meetings to negotiate with representatives from engineering firms and municipalities. The position also involves attending site meetings to resolve specific issues related to the company's facilities and proposed improvements. The successful candidate will prioritize and schedule projects based on the company's requirements, ensuring effective utilization of the GIS and asset management systems for all capital construction design work. Overall, the role is crucial in ensuring that all work is performed safely, compliantly, and cost-effectively, maximizing system integrity and reliability for customers.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Engineering Manager and Field Operations in designing and estimating construction projects for natural gas facilities.
  • Record and track improvement plans from preliminary to final stages through construction.
  • Coordinate daily assignments and oversight of GIS Analysts and Construction Engineers.
  • Work on special projects such as bridge and railroad crossings and design non-standard services.
  • Specify and order non-stock materials required for main and service work.
  • Review design and cost estimates for main and service work, including delivery pressures.
  • Handle calls and correspondence regarding job and project statuses.
  • Prepare necessary paperwork related to gas main and service work procedures.
  • Attend utility and pre-construction meetings to negotiate with engineering firms and municipalities.
  • Attend site meetings to resolve issues with the company's facilities and proposed improvements.
  • Schedule and prioritize projects based on company requirements.
  • Utilize the company's GIS and asset management system for capital construction design work.
  • Ensure compliance with company standards and applicable State and Federal codes for design work.
  • Perform all work in a safe, compliant, and cost-effective manner.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited school required.
  • Engineering in Training certificate preferred.
  • Minimum 0-2 years' engineering experience in natural gas or similar industries.
  • Knowledge of project management techniques and ability to lead across functional teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build rapport with diverse individuals.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Spire's systems such as Maximo, OBIEE, Oracle, Sharepoint, Asana.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with GIS systems and asset management software.
  • Familiarity with regulatory codes pertinent to pipelines and natural gas operations.
