About the position

The Engine Boss (ENGB) is a seasonal leadership role responsible for overseeing a fire engine and its personnel during wildland fire incidents. This position ensures the safety of the crew and manages operations on the ground, reporting to various supervisory roles within the organization. The role offers opportunities for career advancement and requires compliance with NWCG qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a single fire engine and attached personnel during wildland incidents.
  • Ensure the safety of assigned personnel on the fire ground.
  • Supervise engine operations and report to a WDS supervisor or other assigned leaders.
  • Maintain and advance NWCG qualifications and task books.
  • Participate in daily tasks and training when not deployed on fire assignments.

  • Introduction to ICS (ICS-100)
  • Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service (L-180)
  • Firefighter Training (S-130 - Field Day Required)
  • Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190)
  • NIMS: An Introduction (IS-700)
  • Wildland Fire Safety Training Annual Refresher (WFSTAR) (RT-130)
  • Ability to pass a WCT (Work Capacity Test/Pack Test) at Arduous Level
  • ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents (ICS-200)
  • Crew Boss (Single Resource) (S-230)
  • Engine Boss (S-231)
  • Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290)
  • Satisfactory performance as a Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1)
  • Completion and Certification of NWCG Engine Boss, Single Resource (ENGB) Position Task Book (PMS 311-13)
  • Must be 21 years of age or older
  • Current driver's license with acceptable driving record
  • DOT Medical Examiner's Certification (will be authorized by employer for qualified individuals)
  • Valid passport and willingness to work in both the U.S. and Canada (for ENGBs hired after 9/19/2024).
