King County Metro Transit's Capital Division is seeking two motivated and detail-oriented Engineers to join our Transit Speed and Reliability Team. In these engaging roles, you will serve as a subject matter expert, leading capital planning projects and tackling transportation engineering solutions and traffic operations analysis. Responsibilities

  • Review engineering plans, drawings, specifications, contract documents, and engineering reports to identify potential transit improvement opportunities and/or incompatibilities with transit operations.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, such as management, vendors, and city staff who partner with King County.
  • Support small- to large-scale projects related to Transit Signal Priority (TSP), spot improvements, corridor improvements, and trolley expansion/modification.
  • Conduct field observations and assessments, perform or evaluate traffic analyses, travel time studies, intersection queuing analyses, and level-of-service calculations using traffic simulation and travel demand modeling software consistent with accepted transportation engineering practices.
  • Support development and negotiation of TSP strategies/timings, with the local jurisdictions, and participate in their implementation.
  • Serve as a Speed & Reliability subject matter expert for new RapidRide projects and RapidRide enhancement projects.
  • Gather and provide technical information to support preparation of grant applications aimed at securing capital funding.
  • Actively engage in transportation engineering communities and participate in ongoing professional development to enhance technical skills.
  • Write reports and make presentations to a variety of internal and external work groups, project teams, committees, and the public as needed.
  • Under the direction of the lead engineer, plan, develop, negotiate, and administer formal agreements with local agencies for project delivery.
  • Assist in negotiating and managing consultant work orders.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering, electrical engineering, or an equivalent degree with a focus on transportation.
  • A minimum of 2 years' experience in transportation engineering or a related field.
  • Familiarity with transportation planning and traffic engineering techniques, principles, practices, and issues.
  • Demonstrated skills in planning, analysis, and reporting of transportation data, applying analytical skills, and making independent decisions.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated hands-on analytical capabilities and sound engineering judgment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor communication to various audiences.
  • Ability to handle politically sensitive issues.
  • A valid Washington State driver's license OR the ability to travel throughout the county in a timely manner.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional experience with one or more of the following: development of coordinated signal timings, signal modification and intersection reconfiguration, corridor re-channelization, parking impact studies, transit priority treatments, traffic signal controller upgrades, and ITS system design.
  • Familiarity with transit operations, service planning, and scheduling fundamentals.
  • Knowledge of MUTCD, HCM, NTCIP, ITS standards, and traffic engineering practices, codes, and regulations.
  • Demonstrated skill in project management techniques and principles, including leading a multi-disciplinary project team.
  • Experience developing signal timing using Synchro and/or VISSIM.
  • Experience in roadway geometric design and/or construction.
  • Experience with the specific traffic signal systems used within King County, including Yunex, Econolite, and Q-Free signal systems and software.
  • Engineering in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineering (PE) license.
  • Active involvement in traffic engineering professional affiliations (e.g., Institute of Transportation Engineers).
