About the position

This position is for an engineer within the New Jersey Capital Portfolio team at Jersey Central Power & Light, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. The role involves developing and managing capital projects, providing technical support during outages, and ensuring the capital portfolio remains on schedule and within budget. The position is mobile, allowing for remote work and travel within the New Jersey service territory.

Responsibilities

  • Working safely in various electric utility settings and adhering to the Accident Prevention Handbook (APH) work practices.
  • Using planning and protection tools such as CYME, Load Forecasting Data Management System, GIS, PI ProcessBook, Energy Management System, and PowerOn to address capacity and reliability issues.
  • Providing technical support and analysis to the Distribution Control Center during major customer outage events.
  • Performing reliability analysis studies and preparing detailed reports for management.
  • Investigating customer inquiries regarding service quality and reliability.
  • Analyzing distribution impacts of transmission and subtransmission programs and projects.
  • Preparing cost estimates, schedules, and justifications for system improvement projects.
  • Assisting with training programs related to data quality, outage reporting, and reliability analysis.
  • Investigating and reporting on operational events.
  • Providing continuous support and proactive involvement regarding technical matters to leadership and peers.
  • Conducting power quality studies as needed and providing technical support for them.
  • Supporting storm response as a storm analyst or hazard dispatcher, as assigned.
  • Working overtime to support storm efforts or special projects as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required.
  • Minimum 0 - 3 years' engineering experience is required.
  • Understanding of electrical engineering and utility power system concepts.
  • Strong knowledge and decision-making skills regarding electrical problems and complex information analysis.
  • Ability to analyze data, write technical reports, and develop work packages.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly in technical writing and presentations.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and knowledge of CAD and GIS software systems.
  • Computer programming ability (including SQL) is a plus.
  • Self-motivated, customer-focused, results-oriented, and a team player.
  • Possess and maintain a valid state-issued driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam is considered a plus.
