About the position

The Engineer - Supplier Quality/Development III position is responsible for managing the selection, development, qualification, and monitoring of suppliers to ensure they provide products and services that meet all First Solar requirements. This role requires a strong background in quality systems processes, including ISO Quality Systems and the use of Advanced Quality Planning tools. Candidates with an Associate's Degree in a technical discipline should have 14 years of relevant work experience, while those with a Bachelor's degree need a minimum of 8 years, and those with a Master's or PhD should have at least 5 years of relevant experience. ASQ Certifications such as CMQ/OE, CMBB, CQA, CQE, and CQI are preferred, along with Third Party Certification as an ISO Internal Auditor. The position demands excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal, facilitation, presentation, quantitative, analytical, and organizational skills. A passion for root cause investigation and the ability to communicate performance metrics and continuous improvement expectations to the supply base are essential. Candidates should demonstrate advanced proficiency with Advanced Quality Planning tools such as FMEA, Control Plan, Process Mapping, Gage Studies, and SPC, as well as Six Sigma, Value Stream Mapping, and Lean Manufacturing principles. The ability to lead cross-functional project teams and mentor peers is also crucial. Essential responsibilities include leading cross-functional teams to execute the Advance Supplier Readiness process for assigned commodities, developing inspection methods, communicating qualification inspection plans, applying advanced quality planning tools, and driving supplier development and continuous improvement. The role requires independent action to identify root causes of non-conformances and ensure proper corrective actions are implemented. Regular supplier audits and business reviews are part of the responsibilities, along with facilitating training sessions in quality tools and supporting the development of performance metrics to drive department improvement. Candidates should be prepared to challenge conventional wisdom and stimulate management thinking by proposing innovative methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead cross-functional teams to execute the Advance Supplier Readiness process for assigned commodities.
  • Identify & develop the inspection methods needed to monitor the critical characteristics of assigned commodities.
  • Communicate qualification inspection plans to regional teams to ensure alignment of processes and proper inspection results for qualification.
  • Apply advanced quality planning tools to drive the successful qualification of new suppliers and products.
  • Perform process interaction analysis utilizing the FMEA approach with development, manufacturing, product, and process engineering teams.
  • Ensure that specifications are clearly defined and effectively communicated to suppliers.
  • Drive supplier identification of true root cause of non-conformances using analytical tools and processes.
  • Monitor and communicate supplier performance by conducting regular supplier audits and participating in business reviews.
  • Manage the intake and process of supplier change requests for assigned commodities.
  • Lead cross-functional project teams to achieve breakthrough process improvements using advanced process control methodologies.
  • Facilitate and lead training sessions in quality tools such as FMEA, SPC, DMAIC, MSA, and Statistics.
  • Support the development of performance metrics which drive department improvement.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in a technical discipline and 14 years of relevant work experience in related quality systems processes, including ISO Quality Systems and use of Advanced Quality Planning tools.
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline with minimum 8 years of relevant work experience in related quality systems processes, including ISO Quality Systems and use of Advanced Quality Planning tools.
  • Master's or PhD degree in a technical discipline with minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in related quality systems processes, including ISO Quality Systems and use of Advanced Quality Planning tools.
  • ASQ Certifications preferred (CMQ/OE, CMBB, CQA, CQE, CQI).
  • Third Party Certification as ISO Internal Auditor preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, facilitation, presentation, quantitative, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines on multiple projects/programs.
  • Strong passion for root cause investigation and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Advanced proficiency with Advanced Quality Planning tools such as FMEA, Control Plan, Process Mapping, Gage Studies, and SPC.
  • Advanced application abilities for Six Sigma, Value Stream Mapping, and Lean Manufacturing principles.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional project teams and mentor peers.
  • Advanced experience with MS Office including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
