About the position

The Utilities Departments will be hiring two interns across various divisions, offering students the chance to gain practical experience in the field. One intern will be stationed at the water and wastewater treatment facilities and responsible for assisting in various field, lab, facility, and compliance-related tasks to support department operations. This position will provide valuable hands-on experience while helping ensure regulatory requirements are met efficiently. The second intern will be assisting project management staff on a critical water meter replacement project. This position will involve coordinating schedules, providing regular updates, and managing contractor relationships to ensure the successful and high-quality completion of the project. Both internships present a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful work while developing professional skills in the utilities sector.

Responsibilities

  • Performs clerical work such as the posting of detailed records, assists the public in filling out forms, proofreads typed materials, and generates reports.
  • Acts as receptionist; answer telephone and personal inquiries; routes visitors and calls; secures information from sources.
  • Operates a variety of office equipment and audio-visual equipment.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Maintains concentration on complex projects for extended periods of time.
  • Makes calls and interact with departments.
  • May survey residents and convey helpful information.
  • Performs other related work (including weather or extreme emergency duties) as required.

Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled as a full-time high school student or have graduated within the last three (3) months for Intern I.
  • Freshman or Sophomore in College/University or Technical/Vocational student for Intern II.
  • Junior or Senior in College/University for Intern III.
  • Must be currently enrolled in a college/university, seeking a graduate (post-baccalaureate) degree or senior level graduate studies for Intern IV.
  • Valid driver's license may be required.
  • Some exposure to or familiarity with area of assigned duties.

Nice-to-haves

  • Students pursuing a degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering, Construction Management or Chemistry or other related fields preferred.
