About the position

The Engineering Manager, Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls is a pivotal role within Newterra, responsible for leading a team of electrical designers and instrumentation & controls specialists. This position is integral to the execution of multi-disciplinary projects and product development, ensuring that all electrical designs, PLC/HMI programs, and troubleshooting support are delivered effectively through factory acceptance testing and startup commissioning. The Engineering Manager will oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of electrical design projects from inception to completion, ensuring that all work aligns with customer specifications and Newterra's operational practices while adhering to budget constraints. In this role, the Engineering Manager will be tasked with developing and maintaining a consistent approach to electrical design and system programming across the organization. This includes reviewing and approving design documentation, facilitating knowledge transfer within the team, and providing support to various departments such as Sales, Applications, and Customer Service. The manager will also play a crucial role in identifying and assigning the necessary design knowledge and skills to support innovation and product development initiatives prioritized by Newterra. As a member of the Engineering leadership team, the Engineering Manager is expected to foster a collaborative and innovative culture, participate in technical discussions, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. This includes developing and adhering to departmental budgets, mentoring direct reports, and ensuring that all safety protocols are followed. The role requires effective communication and leadership skills to manage team dynamics and project expectations successfully.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate and oversee electrical design and system programming projects from concept to completion, ensuring accuracy, alignment to customer specifications and Newterra practices within the allocated budget.
  • Ensure resources are assigned and available to appropriately support factory acceptance testing and startup and commissioning activities as needed to meet customer expectations and Newterra's commitments.
  • Develop and maintain consistent process and approach for project and product electrical design and system programming across the company.
  • Review and approve design documentation, including drawings, specifications and reports.
  • Improve knowledge transfer within Newterra.
  • Provide support to Sales, Applications, Procurement, Marketing, Lifecycle, Environmental Solutions and Customer Service as required.
  • Identify and assign the required design knowledge and skills from the team as needed to support innovation and product development initiatives as prioritized by Newterra.
  • Provide regular status communication to management and team members.
  • Participate in technical discussions and decisions with project teams.
  • Participate in relevant quality initiatives, driving a continuous improvement culture within the team to address tool/process/efficiency improvements as well as feedback from production, the field, and other areas of the organization.
  • Develop and adhere to department budget.
  • Recruit employees, assign, direct, and evaluate their work; and oversee the development and maintenance of staff competence.
  • Provide regular reporting on team metrics.
  • Lead, mentor and develop direct reports to their full potential as engaged members of the Newterra team.

Requirements

  • College or university graduate in a technical field (preferably electrical or instrumentation & controls based) required, or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years' experience in a leadership or mentorship role.
  • Experience with PLC's, programming, power distributions, motor controls, instrumentation wiring and NEC/CEC standards preferred.
  • Experience with wastewater or water treatment system design strongly preferred.
  • Proven working knowledge of Pumps, Blowers, and other fluid handling equipment.
  • Excellent organization, time management, and leadership skills.
  • Competent in Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
