Engineering Manager, Storage

About the position

The Storage teams build and operate online stateful systems and abstractions that are reliable, efficient, secure and easy to use for DoorDash Engineering. The teams are responsible for understanding Product Engineering’s evolving needs and developing platform and infrastructure capabilities to serve them. The team currently supports CockroachDB, Cassandra, Kafka, Redis and Amazon Aurora as well as data abstraction services to reduce the complexity of interacting with storage systems for Product Engineers.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of engineers focused on scaling and optimizing distributed databases and abstractions.
• Drive architectural decisions for high-performance, fault-tolerant data abstractions built using NoSQL databases (e.g., Cassandra) and caching solutions (Redis or Memcached).
• Collaborate cross-functionally with platform, infrastructure, and application teams to ensure seamless data access, consistency, and reliability.
• Bring expertise in building and operating high scale systems and open source software with a focus on reliability, scalability, efficiency and ease of use.
• Build, sustain, and grow a diverse team to address the growing needs of the organization.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in backend engineering, with 2+ years leading engineering teams.
• Hands-on experience with one or more large-scale databases (CockroachDB, Cassandra, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, or similar).
• Strong track record of hiring, onboarding, and mentoring Senior Engineers.
• Excel in technical leadership, providing guidance in architecture decisions, performance improvements, and team growth.
• Execution-driven, with a proven ability to deliver large-scale distributed storage solutions in fast-moving environments.
