About the position

The Engineering Technician I and II positions involve engaging in a wide range of technical engineering office and field support tasks under direct supervision. The roles include learning and executing basic technical engineering work while fulfilling assigned related duties. The Engineering Technician I is an entry-level class where incumbents learn and perform basic technical engineering office and field work, while the Engineering Technician II is a journey-level class that requires previous experience and involves a broader range of more complex assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and processes encroachment permit applications.
  • Reviews and provides comments on construction plans.
  • Performs construction oversight and documents construction activities.
  • Attends and successfully completes courses in the use of engineering software, including CAD and GIS software.
  • Updates County Road network pavement condition index using specialized software.
  • Prepares engineering exhibits and engineering drawings using CAD software.
  • Updates Geographic Information System (GIS) by preparing engineering drawings and inputting data.
  • Assists with the development of estimates, plans, and specifications for various projects.
  • Assists with construction inspections to ensure conformance with established plans and specifications.
  • Performs basic contract administration and recordkeeping.
  • Answers questions from the public regarding the Department of Public Works functions and activities.
  • Investigates and resolves complaints from the public.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • Possession of a high school diploma; an associate degree or bachelor's degree is highly desirable.
  • Two years of work experience performing engineering support duties, including observing road or utility construction, preparing engineering drawings, using geographic information software, and processing permits/applications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Basic knowledge of civil engineering.
  • Basic knowledge of surveying.
  • Experience with CAD and GIS systems.
