Auto-Owners Insurance, a top-rated insurance carrier, is seeking a motivated underwriting trainee to join our team. The underwriting trainee will perform and apply insurance coverage, rules, and guidelines to execute the underwriting decision-making process according to the company's underwriting philosophy. This role includes comprehensive training and development through the completion of the company's underwriter training program for the assigned line of insurance. The trainee will learn various insurance coverages and contracts, along with the company's philosophy and procedures, to make informed underwriting decisions. This involves reading, interpreting, and reacting to documents such as policies, manuals, forms, and endorsements to understand their meaning and use. The trainee will also be responsible for assembling information, developing opinions, and clearly expressing decisions using sound reasoning and judgment. Analyzing loss experience, financial conditions, and physical characteristics of risks will be a key part of the role, as well as acquiring a working knowledge of supporting sections of the underwriting department. Effective communication with independent agents and other associates through verbal and/or written means is essential. The trainee will participate in and successfully complete the company underwriter training program, which is designed to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their role. Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or direct equivalent experience with property/casualty underwriting.
  • Ability to organize data, multi-task, and make decisions independently.
  • Above average communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to write reports and compose correspondence.
  • Ability to resolve complex issues.
  • Continually develop product knowledge through participation in approved educational programs.
