About the position

The Environmental Engineer 5 - Civil/Conveyance Focus at CDM Smith is responsible for designing and evaluating civil pipeline and conveyance projects, including water and wastewater treatment facilities. This role involves performing water quality analyses, managing project activities, ensuring regulatory compliance, and mentoring junior staff. The engineer will also contribute to technical documentation and collaborate with sales staff to respond to client proposals.

Responsibilities

  • Creates evaluations and designs of civil pipeline/conveyance projects including water and wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Performs water quality analyses or system modeling and calculations for utility-related projects.
  • Conducts site reviews and studies to ensure designs meet location specifications.
  • Prepares technical specifications and contract documents for publicly bid design projects.
  • Reviews designs and reports for compliance with regulations and signs off on completed designs.
  • Contributes to regulatory compliance programs, particularly for stormwater/MS4 projects.
  • Manages assessment and design activities in a client-facing role, acting as Task Manager or Project Technical Leader.
  • Develops white papers and technical documentation for new designs and submits for publication.
  • Collaborates with sales staff to create proposals and meets with clients to discuss design needs.
  • Provides technical guidance and training to junior staff and may supervise their work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental or Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Professional engineering (PE) license.
  • 7 years of related experience.
  • Expert knowledge of computer-assisted design and drafting (CADD) software.
  • Expert knowledge of engineering principles of design.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Expert knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with project management software.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and compliance standards.
