About the position

At Argo Group, we are dedicated to serving specialty markets by providing tailored coverage solutions that meet the unique needs of our clients. As an Excess Casualty Underwriter, you will play a crucial role in underwriting new business and renewals in accordance with established guidelines and your authority level. This position can be performed remotely or from one of our Argo offices, allowing for flexibility in your work environment. Your primary responsibilities will include reviewing and pricing policies to ensure they align with our underwriting guidelines and your granted authority. You will utilize various underwriting tools to accurately classify risks, determine rates, and establish premium charges. A significant part of your role will involve interacting with wholesale brokers through in-person meetings, emails, and phone calls to gather risk-specific information, negotiate terms, and clarify our company's positions. In addition to managing your assigned underwriting territory, you will oversee the management of agents and may need to travel to their offices as required. You will also be responsible for approving endorsements, resolving premium audit disputes, and ensuring compliance with state laws regarding cancellation and non-renewal. Your analytical skills will be put to use as you create, analyze, and interpret data from various reports, contributing to informed decision-making within the underwriting process. Other duties may be assigned as necessary to support the team's objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Review and price policies to verify acceptability based upon company underwriting guidelines and granted underwriting authority.
  • Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges.
  • Interact with wholesale brokers to obtain risk-specific details, negotiate terms and pricing, and explain company positions.
  • Manage assigned underwriting territory, including management of agents and travel to agent offices.
  • Oversee and approve endorsements as indicated.
  • Resolve premium audit disputes within assigned territory.
  • Review state laws regarding cancellation and non-renewal to ensure compliance.
  • Create, analyze, and interpret data from various reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or two to five years related insurance experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One to three years underwriting experience with authority, preferably in excess and surplus lines.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Previous insurance educational work, IIA and CPCU desirable.
  • Detail oriented with initiative and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Proficient in the use of computer programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
