About the position

The Executive Director of the Secretariat of Justice and Peace at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) plays a pivotal role in advancing the mission of the USCCB and the priorities set forth by the Bishops, particularly in the realm of international justice and peace. Under the guidance of the Chairman and the Committee on International Justice and Peace, the Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the Office of International Justice and Peace, ensuring that its activities align with the strategic goals of the Conference. This position requires a collaborative approach, working closely with the Executive Director, Directors, and Associate Director of the Secretariat to promote the Church's social mission in relation to international priorities. The Director must be a practicing Catholic, actively engaged in a Catholic community, and committed to upholding the teachings of the Catholic Church in all aspects of their work. The Director's responsibilities encompass a wide range of management tasks, including leading and coordinating the daily operations of the Office, supervising staff, and developing new policy initiatives. The role also involves significant collaboration with other Conference offices to ensure that the Office's activities are in line with the overall mission and strategic plan of the bishops. The Director is tasked with ensuring compliance with USCCB policies and managing the Office's participation in budgeting and administrative responsibilities. In addition to management duties, the Director is responsible for staffing Bishops' Committees, providing support for the Committee on International Justice and Peace, and coordinating efforts with other committees. The position also requires a strong focus on policy development and advocacy, including public policy analyses on international issues, advocacy with government officials, and the development of official communications on behalf of the bishops. The Director will represent the USCCB in various capacities, maintaining relationships with Catholic Relief Services and other organizations, and facilitating collaboration with ecumenical and interfaith partners. Education and communication are also key components of the role, as the Director will develop presentations and educational materials on international issues and Catholic social teaching, while also coordinating responses to media inquiries.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, and coordinate the activities of the Office of International Justice and Peace.
  • Develop new policy positions and initiatives in collaboration with the Chairman and Executive Director.
  • Work collegially with the Secretariat team to promote the overall mission of the bishops.
  • Ensure compliance with USCCB administrative and personnel policies within the Office.
  • Supervise and coordinate staff assistance for the Committee on International Justice and Peace.
  • Contribute to public policy analyses and advocacy on international issues.
  • Represent and advocate for Conference positions on international policy with various stakeholders.
  • Coordinate policy and advocacy efforts with Catholic Relief Services and other organizations.
  • Develop and deliver presentations on international issues and Catholic Social Teaching.
  • Collaborate with other Conference offices on major meetings and educational materials.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Theology, Public Policy, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a relevant field.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Catholic Church and its social teachings.
  • Knowledge of major international issues, diplomacy, and public policy formation processes.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills.
  • Management experience demonstrating effective skills in supervision and administration.
  • Ability to build consensus and problem-solve in complex situations.
  • Familiarity with religious education and formation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Fluency in Spanish and knowledge of French is helpful but not required.
  • Experience in policy development and advocacy on international justice and peace.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $127,907 - $166,602 per year.
