About the position

The Executive Underwriter, Technology Lead - Middle Market, West Division is a pivotal role at Liberty Mutual Insurance, responsible for developing, growing, and maintaining a profitable book of technology Property & Casualty business. This position requires a strong focus on marketing and underwriting decision-making, as well as building mutually beneficial relationships with agents and brokers. The ideal candidate will be located in a West Coast market and possess active broker relationships in the area. The role involves guiding and mentoring less experienced underwriters, providing regular coaching and feedback to management regarding employee progress. In terms of risk selection, the Executive Underwriter will review, rate, underwrite, evaluate, and assess business for insurance. This includes qualifying accounts, identifying and selecting risks, determining premiums, policy terms, and conditions, and successfully negotiating deals. A high level of responsiveness to agents and brokers is essential, as is the ability to establish and maintain successful relationships that facilitate the marketing of products. The Executive Underwriter will also manage a sizable and complex book of technology business, analyzing the portfolio to identify opportunities for growth and diversification. Documentation is a critical aspect of this role, requiring comprehensive account reviews and adherence to state regulations and underwriting guidelines. Leadership is also a key component, as the Executive Underwriter will formally guide and mentor underwriters and account analysts, sharing expertise and providing regular updates. Continuous improvement is encouraged, with participation in problem-solving activities and the use of improvement tools to support team efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, grow, and maintain a profitable book of technology Property & Casualty business.
  • Review, rate, underwrite, evaluate, and assess business for insurance by qualifying accounts and identifying risks.
  • Determine premiums, policy terms, and conditions, and negotiate deals with agents and brokers.
  • Establish and maintain successful relationships with agents and brokers to facilitate product marketing.
  • Manage a sizable and complex book of technology business, analyzing the portfolio for growth opportunities.
  • Document files reflecting a solid thought process and decision-making in compliance with regulations and guidelines.
  • Guide, mentor, and coach less experienced underwriters and account analysts in technical and professional skills.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and problem-solving activities.

Requirements

  • Advanced-level knowledge of insurance products, underwriting, pricing, and risk selection.
  • Ability to utilize underwriting tools and resources to achieve goals and solve complex problems.
  • A related bachelor's degree is required; seven to ten years of relevant experience preferred.
  • CPCU or professional insurance designation is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of underwriting technology business experience is required.
  • Experience with Technology E&O and Cyber insurance is strongly preferred.
