About the position

Hamamatsu, a leading supplier of advanced light detectors and detector systems, is seeking a Field Service Engineer to join our team in the Middlesex, NJ area. This role is crucial as it involves direct interaction with our diverse customer base, which includes Fortune 100 companies, top research laboratories, and innovative startups. The primary mission of Hamamatsu is to enhance societal welfare through the advancement of photonics technology, and the Field Service Engineer plays a vital role in achieving this goal by ensuring our products operate effectively and efficiently in the field. The Field Service Engineer will be responsible for providing on-site service, which includes repairs, maintenance, upgrades, and installations of our advanced light detection systems. This position requires a proactive approach to customer service, as the engineer will also be tasked with training customers on the operation of our products and addressing any questions they may have regarding product use. Troubleshooting support is a key component of this role, and the engineer will utilize remote software tools such as WebEx and TeamViewer, as well as phone and email communication, to assist customers in identifying and resolving issues. Additionally, on-site visits may be necessary to provide hands-on support. The role also involves managing a parts inventory to ensure that necessary components are available for on-site service, as well as communicating with the factory to identify critical parts. The Field Service Engineer will represent Hamamatsu at tradeshows, explaining our products and their applications in various industries. Keeping track of all service activities in the Service Management system and generating service reports for customers is essential for maintaining high standards of service. The engineer will also prepare quotations for services and service contracts, and may be involved in special projects as requested by management.

Responsibilities

  • On-site service including repairs, maintenance, upgrades and installations
  • Training customers on operation of products and answering questions on product use
  • Troubleshooting support for customers via remote software, phone, email and/or on-site visits
  • Installation and removal of demo/loaner equipment at customer site
  • Maintain a parts inventory for on-site service; communicate with the factory to identify critical parts
  • Represent Hamamatsu at tradeshows and explain our products and their industry applications
  • Track all activities in the Service Management system and generate service reports for customers
  • Prepare quotations for service to be performed and for service contracts
  • Special projects as requested

Requirements

  • Associates in Applied Science in Electronics or equivalent technical school
  • 3 years' experience servicing scientific/technical equipment
  • Proficiency in spreadsheet and word processing software
  • Strong mechanical ability and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to travel on short notice
  • Ability to travel 50% of the time, with occasional higher spikes and travel outside of the US
  • Experience with computer hardware, including installation of hardware, software, drivers, and operating systems
  • Self-managed with a focus on customer satisfaction
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to transport oneself to and from appointments

Nice-to-haves

  • Past integration experience and/or experience using, servicing, installing imaging or scanning equipment/components
  • Experience with mechanical systems, robotics or sample handling
  • Supervisory or lead experience
