About the position

The Finance Director will play a critical role in partnering with the senior leadership team in strategic decision making and operations as our organizations plan and implement a strategy for growth, while enhancing the quality of our programming. The goal is to protect the company’s revenues and profits to achieve full financial control and sustainable growth. This is a tremendous opportunity for a finance leader to maximize and strengthen the internal capacity of a fast-paced, well-respected, high-impact organization. This role requires hands-on involvement, where the Finance Director will actively engage in day-to-day financial and accounting tasks and processes.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and actively participates in the financial management of both EnviroVoters 501c(4) and Education Fund 501c(3), including long- and short-term financial planning, financial analysis, budgeting, financial reporting, cash management, and investments.
  • Ensures compliance with GAAP, organizational policies, and federal/state tax requirements.
  • Establishes the guidelines and procedures of the annual budget, and mid-year forecasting processes. Oversees the preparation and provides the final review of budgets/forecasts.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and reports on monthly revenue and expense, variance analyses, balance sheets and cash forecasts. Prepares monthly forecasting reports and provides thoughtful commentary for Management's and the Board's use in understanding the financial results.
  • Performs risk management by analyzing the organization’s liabilities and investments.
  • Decides on investment strategies by considering cash and liquidity risks.
  • Controls and evaluates the organization’s fundraising plans and capital structure. Ensures cash flow is appropriate for the organization’s operations.
  • Supervises all finance personnel and manages vendor relationships.
  • Sets up and oversees the company’s finance IT system.
  • Actively engages in grant tracking, allocation, budgeting, and reporting in partnership with the Program and Philanthropy staff.
  • Oversees all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations and preparation of monthly financial reports.
  • Provides oversight of the annual audit process and the preparation of annual tax returns and filings.
  • Maintains and updates accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Cultivates strong lines of communication with other departments, including partnering with Political Director to ensure compliance around all electoral activity and PAC activities, in collaboration with the organizations outside compliance reporting consultants.
  • Supports the Board of Director's audit committees, including developing and presenting board reports.
  • Performs special Finance projects and other duties and tasks as assigned by the Managing Director/CEO.

Requirements

  • MBA/CPA, or equivalent experience.
  • At least ten (10) years of overall professional experience; ideally six-plus years of broad financial experience and five-(5+) plus years of increasing leadership experience in general accounting controls, systems, and procedures in a political or nonprofit organization.
  • Demonstrated experience with GAAP compliance.
  • Experience having final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination for either a division or significant program area.
  • Ability to translate financial concepts - and to effectively collaborate with - programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds.
  • A track record in grants management and knowledge of restricted contributions/grant reporting.
  • Technology savvy with knowledge of accounting and financial reporting software such as QuickBooks, Excel and BILL.com.
  • A successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organizational, problem-solving and critical thinking skills which supports and enables sound decision making.

  • Experience with nonprofit fund accounting (501(c)4, (501(c)3, and PAC) and reporting.
