About the position

The Financial Counselor serves as a vital link between patients and the practice, focusing on coordinating payments, assisting patients with financial responsibilities, and ensuring accurate communication regarding insurance benefits. This role involves monitoring patient balances, performing quality control for pre-certification and prior authorization, and maintaining up-to-date insurance information in electronic medical records and billing software.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and coordinate pre-certification and prior authorization processes with insurance companies.
  • Review patient schedules to establish financial responsibilities for upcoming visits or treatments.
  • Verify insurance benefit coverage and communicate any exceptions to the provider.
  • Generate service estimates and explain insurance benefits to patients.
  • Assist patients in completing necessary paperwork for financial assistance programs.
  • Review patient aging balances and establish arrangements for outstanding balances.
  • Communicate regularly with providers and staff regarding fiscal responsibilities.
  • Work with outside entities to ensure timely completion of necessary forms.
  • Maintain compliance with federal and state laws regarding patient care and billing.
  • Keep work area organized and maintain company equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; further education or degree is a plus.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in the healthcare field, preferably in a clinical or business office setting.
  • Experience in healthcare customer service and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of medical insurance verification and pre-certification processes.
  • Excellent verbal and communication skills.
  • Understanding of medical terminology, ICD9, ICD10, and CPT codes.
  • Experience in cash handling and monetary collection.
  • Ability to calculate patient responsibilities and insurance co-pays.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proficiency in a second language is an asset.
