About the position

The Float Health Center Associate I (HCA I) position at Planned Parenthood North Central States is a vital role that involves providing comprehensive support to patients and visitors at various health center locations, including Des Moines, Ames, Urbandale, Susan Knapp, Iowa City, and Cedar Rapids. This full-time position requires flexibility in scheduling, with shifts that may start as early as 7:45 AM and extend as late as 8:30 PM. The HCA I will be responsible for welcoming patients, registering them for services, and ensuring they receive unbiased support throughout their visit. This role is essential in maintaining the flow of operations within the health center and ensuring that all patients feel valued and supported. In addition to patient registration and support, the HCA I will perform various administrative tasks, including answering phones, directing calls, and managing patient data entry. The role also involves maintaining patient medical records, collecting and verifying financial information, and assisting patients with insurance navigation and funding applications. The HCA I will be expected to inform patients about potential costs for services, collect fees, and ensure compliance with cash handling policies. Furthermore, the position requires the HCA I to prepare charge tickets for clinical staff, reconcile charge reports, and promote donations at the time of checkout. The HCA I will also play a crucial role in inventory management, processing clinical supplies, and participating in the onboarding and training of new employees. This position is represented by the SEIU union, and candidates must meet specific immunization requirements, including Hepatitis B and MMR vaccinations, as well as a recent Tuberculosis PPD skin test. Overall, the Float Health Center Associate I is a dynamic role that requires a commitment to providing high-quality care and support to patients in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome all patients and visitors and register them for health center services.
  • Answer phones, direct calls, and reach out to patients as needed.
  • Perform computer data entry, including patient demographics, insurance information, and appointment scheduling.
  • Ensure all patients receive unbiased patient support and assistance, assessing patient questions and directing them to appropriate resources.
  • Maintain patient medical records and obtain patient consent for forms as necessary.
  • Handle requests for patient medical records appropriately.
  • Collect, assess, and verify patient financial information and determine and confirm insurance coverage.
  • Comply with all funding source requirements and assist patients in applying for and obtaining funding.
  • Provide patients with resources for insurance navigation, financial counseling, and community sliding scale health centers.
  • Accurately inform patients of potential costs for services and assess and collect patient fees.
  • Reconcile, prepare, and make bank deposits, complying with cash handling policies.
  • Prepare charge tickets for clinical staff coding and charge post for clinical services, reviewing charges for accuracy.
  • Ensure all patients are provided with information regarding donations and are asked for a donation at the time of checkout.
  • Ensure all patients complete patient experience surveys.
  • Follow all federal, state, and local laws regarding mandated reporting, abortion services, healthcare services, and HIPAA.
  • Perform inventory functions and process and stock clinical supplies that are received.
  • Provide factual, unbiased information to patients seeking abortion services.
  • Participate in the onboarding of new employees and support the cross-training of established employees.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One to two years of customer service experience.
