About the position

The Learning for Independence (LFI) Special Education Teacher at Springbrook High School is responsible for providing comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling services to students. This role focuses on enhancing academic achievement, aiding in career and educational decision-making, and fostering personal and social development among students. The teacher will work closely with students to help them navigate their educational journey, ensuring they receive the support necessary to thrive in a school environment. Additionally, the teacher will act as a consultant to staff, parents, and the community, providing insights and guidance on best practices for supporting students with special needs. In this position, the teacher will utilize their thorough knowledge of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) policies and procedures, as well as the Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program. They will be expected to understand the growth and developmental stages of adolescents, which is crucial for tailoring their approach to meet the diverse needs of students. The role requires excellent communication skills, both oral and written, to effectively engage with students, parents, and staff. The teacher will also need to demonstrate strong human relations skills, establishing positive relationships with a variety of individuals and groups within the school community. The LFI Special Education Teacher will be expected to work full-time, adhering to a day shift schedule, and will be involved in various activities that promote the well-being and success of students. This includes using technology for online scheduling and other administrative tasks, as well as participating in team meetings and collaborative efforts to enhance the educational experience for all students.

Requirements

  • Meets Maryland state certification requirements for school guidance and counseling.
  • Master's degree from an accredited college or university in school guidance and counseling.
  • Experience as a teacher and/or counselor preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of MCPS Policies and Procedures and the Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program.
  • Knowledge of growth and developmental stages of adolescents.
  • Ability to read, take notes, and interpret written materials.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and independently with staff, students, and parents.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong human relations skills.
