About the position

The Teacher, Special Education (LAD) at Odessa Shannon Middle School is responsible for providing direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities. This role operates under the direction of the school principal and the special education supervisor, ensuring that students receive the necessary educational support tailored to their individual needs. The teacher will collaborate closely with general education teachers to create an inclusive learning environment that promotes the academic and social development of students with disabilities. A key aspect of this position involves monitoring and evaluating the educational outcomes for students with disabilities. The teacher will assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), which are essential for outlining the specific educational goals and services required for each student. This includes adapting instructional programs and materials to meet diverse learning needs and ensuring compliance with state and federal policies related to special education, such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The ideal candidate will possess a thorough knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum and special education program, as well as best instructional practices and research-based reading instruction. Strong communication skills are essential for effectively working with students, parents, and guardians, as well as for collaborating with other educators. The teacher will also be expected to apply the six performance standards established for the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS) to enhance their professional development and instructional effectiveness.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to create an inclusive learning environment.
  • Monitor and evaluate educational outcomes for students with disabilities.
  • Assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Adapt instructional programs and materials to meet diverse learning needs.

Requirements

  • Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in special education.
  • Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
  • Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level (elementary or secondary).
  • Knowledge of the MCPS curriculum for the grade/content range of the position.
  • Thorough knowledge of IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, and best instructional practices.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification in a content area is desirable.
