The Special Education Teacher at Longview School plays a crucial role in providing direct instruction and support to students with disabilities. This position is under the direction of the school principal and the special education supervisor, ensuring that the educational needs of students with multiple disabilities are met effectively. The teacher will collaborate closely with general education teachers to create an inclusive learning environment that fosters the academic and social development of all students. A significant aspect of this role involves monitoring and evaluating the educational outcomes for students with disabilities, ensuring that they are making progress towards their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The teacher will assist in the development of these IEPs, tailoring educational strategies to meet the unique needs of each student. In addition to instructional responsibilities, the Special Education Teacher is expected to possess a thorough understanding of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum and special education programs. This includes knowledge of relevant laws and policies such as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). The teacher must be adept in differentiated instruction, data collection, and best instructional practices, particularly in research-based reading instruction and elementary math methods. Excellent communication skills are essential for effectively collaborating with students, parents, and other educators, as well as for adapting instructional materials to suit diverse learning needs. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in special education and meet the Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I). Experience in student teaching or two years of teaching in a relevant area is preferred, along with a strong foundation in learning theory, child development, and applied behavior analysis.
