About the position

The General Mechanic-Electrician position involves performing journeyman work in the electrical trade under general supervision. The incumbent will be responsible for repairing, maintaining, installing, inspecting, and testing electrical systems and equipment in accordance with safety regulations and building codes. This role requires specialized knowledge in electrical systems and may involve additional skilled and semi-skilled duties within the maintenance series. The position is essential personnel and operates under the standards set by the National Guard Bureau and the Division of Military and Naval Affairs.

Responsibilities

  • Repair, maintain, install, inspect and test all electrical systems and equipment such as motors, transformers, wiring, switches, alarm systems, traffic controls, elevators, and small appliances.
  • Operate electrical test equipment such as ammeters, volt meters, ohmmeters, and oscilloscopes.
  • Read circuit diagrams, architectural blueprints, and generator and motor control diagrams.
  • Plan, design or sketch the layout, location, and installation of wiring and equipment according to building codes and safety regulations.
  • Locate and determine electrical malfunctions using test instruments and perform required repairs.
  • Test electrical equipment such as generators and heaters for safety and efficiency using standard test equipment.
  • Inspect circuits and wiring for specified shielding and grounding and repair and rewire systems according to building codes and safety regulations.
  • Install fixtures, motors, and electrical equipment.
  • Replace bearings in motors and repair mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, or electrical components of electrical equipment and controls.
  • Prepare sketches showing location of all wiring and equipment or follow diagrams or blueprints.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a New York State (NYS) two-year Electrician Traineeship or NYS two-year electrician training program, or equivalent electrical two-year training or apprenticeship program.
  • Four years of full-time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled journey-level electrician.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must be able to read and write in English.
  • Must be able to work comfortably at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to push, pull, lift and carry heavy objects and equipment (50+ lbs).
  • Must possess a valid driver's license to operate a motor vehicle in the State of New York.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with commonly utilized software programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to operate and maintain assigned tools, machinery, and equipment in a safe and effective manner.

Benefits

  • Annual salary range from $48,956 to $59,757.
  • Downstate Adjustment of $3,400 annually.
