About The Position

The Geologic Inventory Assistant position is part of the Geoscientists in Forests (GSF) Program, which offers emerging geoscientists paid professional development opportunities through the USDA Forest Service. This role focuses on conducting field-oriented research, inventory, and monitoring of geologic strata along the Manistee River/NCT Loop Trail. The assistant will gain hands-on experience in geoscience while contributing to essential projects that support the management of National Forest System lands.

Requirements

  • Must be a United States citizen, national, or Legal Permanent Resident.
  • At least 18 years old; must complete the project while age 30 or under (or 35 if a military veteran).
  • High school diploma or equivalent; must obtain a diploma if not already held before using the education award.
  • Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check and federal background check.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and a good driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years of undergraduate or graduate college experience in geological sciences.
  • Coursework in stratigraphy, glacial geology, geomorphology, hydrology, geohazards, and/or GIS.
  • Experience collecting field data with a GPS unit and/or a tablet.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct an inventory of geologic strata along a ~22 mile trail loop in the Manistee River Valley.
  • Develop and refine a sampling plan for the inventory.
  • Document findings in an appropriate geospatial format/database.
  • Hike long stretches of trail to collect samples of soil parent materials.
  • Transport samples to a lab for further analysis as needed.
  • Document locations of major stratigraphic and topographic changes using a GPS unit.
  • Assist the Forest Soil Scientist in a soil mapping update project by digging and describing soil pits.
  • Draft and deliver a final report with figures highlighting major findings, stratigraphy, and cross-sections.
