The Senior Geotechnical Engineer - Discipline Leader at CDM Smith is a pivotal role focused on leading and expanding the geotechnical discipline and team on a national scale. This position combines technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, requiring the individual to manage multidisciplinary projects, drive business growth, and mentor staff. The role emphasizes innovative problem-solving in geotechnical engineering, particularly in large-scale infrastructure projects such as dams and levees, while collaborating with sales teams to highlight technical differentiators.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, management, and technical expertise for multidisciplinary projects including dams, levees, and heavy-civil works.
  • Position the company ahead of market challenges by showcasing technical differentiators.
  • Expand the geotechnical business related to dams and levees to complement other business lines.
  • Act as a recognized leader of technical and professional staff.
  • Serve as a technical specialist in advanced geotechnical engineering applications.
  • Recruit, retain, and mentor top technical employees.
  • Anticipate and adopt new technologies to solve client challenges.
  • Collaborate with other discipline leaders to cultivate innovative solutions and research projects.
  • Drive a culture of quality and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical, Civil, Mining, or Geologic Engineering or related discipline.
  • Professional engineering (PE) license.
  • 15 years of related experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduate degree in Civil Engineering with Geotechnical Engineering emphasis.
  • Working knowledge of FLAC 2D/3D or Plaxis 2D/3D.
  • Experience in dams, levees, trenchless design, tunnels, or geo-environmental projects.
  • Experience with staff management, project management, and business development.
