The GIS Technician I position is an entry-level role focused on creating and organizing spatial and tabular data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies. The technician will be responsible for updating and maintaining moderately complex database information, providing customer service related to GIS data, and ensuring the accuracy of GIS products. This role involves technical functions such as generating computer maps, performing quality assurance, and assisting County staff with GIS systems.

  • Perform intermediate GIS technical functions and generate computer maps for specific purposes.
  • Organize, create, manipulate, enter, and retrieve GIS data for reporting, analysis, and presentation.
  • Draw and compute dimensions according to assigned functional areas such as public works and property management.
  • Perform GIS functions including topological overlays and prepare for digitizing and mapping productions.
  • Complete final clean-up and accuracy checks on digitized maps and perform quality assurance on GIS products.
  • Provide technical assistance and oversight to County staff in the use of GIS systems and data.
  • Maintain proficiency with GIS software as system capacity expands.
  • Create custom visual representations of GIS data for end users and convert data into common formats.
  • Attend meetings and training workshops to stay updated on trends in the GIS field.
  • Associate's Degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience.
  • Valid Florida Drivers License.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations applicable to GIS work.
  • Understanding of GIS database development, management, and maintenance principles.
  • Familiarity with digitizing techniques and standard cartographic survey procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of higher math applicable to land survey and cartographic practices.
  • Experience with CADD production techniques and information management related to GIS technologies.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Full-time employment with a competitive hourly wage of $19.58.
