About the position

The Network Technician, under the direction of the Network Manager, is responsible for the front-line support and maintenance of the Tribe's IT network resources and data centers across tribal government, gaming & hospitality, health and enterprises. Responds to Helpdesk service requests relating to network issues and connectivity, providing solutions or escalating and collaborating with other IT resources to resolve in a timely manner. Monitors the entire WAN to proactively resolve issues and works with all IT teams on data center management. Provides support to other IT resources needing networking expertise or assistance.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively monitor network performance metrics (latency, bandwidth utilization, uptime) across a large multi-site organization with multiple data centers, identifying potential issues and bottlenecks.
  • Utilize network monitoring tools to diagnose network problems, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and escalate complex problems to Network Administrators or Network Manager.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as updating firmware on network devices, applying security patches, and verifying cable connections.
  • Respond to user-reported network connectivity issues, providing initial troubleshooting support and escalating unresolved issues to Network Administrators.
  • Assist Network Administrators with network configuration changes, deployments, and upgrades, following established procedures and maintaining detailed documentation.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot network devices (switches, routers, firewalls) ensuring optimal network performance and security.
  • Configure and manage basic network settings like VLANs, port security, and access control lists (ACLs).
  • Collaborate with Server Administrators to ensure seamless network connectivity for all servers, applications, and data centers.
  • Monitor and maintain Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems, ensuring power availability for critical network devices.
  • Assist Network Administrators and IT Network Manager with physical aspects of network infrastructure, such as installing new equipment and cabling.
  • Create and maintain clean professional patch cabling, rack administration, power cabling, and clear labeling of all cables and ports in all data centers.
  • Provide basic technical support to users experiencing network connectivity or access issues, documenting troubleshooting steps and solutions.
  • Communicate effectively with users regarding network outages, scheduled maintenance, and resolution timelines.
  • Escalate complex user issues to Network Administrators or Network Manager for further investigation and resolution.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of network devices, configurations, cabling layouts, and network topology across all sites.
  • Track network equipment inventory, including model numbers, serial numbers, and warranty information.
  • Assist with updating network diagrams and documentation to reflect changes in the network infrastructure.
  • Document all work and support in the IT Help Desk.
  • Stay updated on emerging network technologies, security threats, and best practices by attending training sessions or pursuing technical certifications.
  • Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing procedures for network infrastructure.
  • Adhere to established IT policies and procedures for network security and user access control.
  • Maintain a professional and helpful demeanor when interacting with users and colleagues.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1 year of experience in IT Network Support or related IT support role in a complex enterprise environment required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department.
  • Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department.
  • Must undergo a Criminal background investigation done under the rules of the National Indian Gaming Commission.
  • Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Strong understanding of network protocols (TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF), network devices (switches, routers, firewalls), and network troubleshooting methodologies.
  • Familiarity with network monitoring software and ability to interpret performance metrics (latency, bandwidth utilization) to identify potential issues.
  • Basic understanding of network security threats and best practices for securing network infrastructure (e.g., VLANs, ACLs).
  • Awareness of challenges and considerations for managing a network across multiple data centers and sites.
  • Basic knowledge of server communication protocols and how network infrastructure supports server operations.
