Graphics Editor

About the position

ProPublica is seeking a graphics editor to create information graphics for stories with real-world impact. You will work closely with ProPublica’s award-winning journalists to pitch, conceptualize, design and build charts, maps, data visualizations, and other interactive graphics. Your projects will range from designing static charts and maps to building interactive features that elevate our daily storytelling. You will be at the center of one of the most exciting newsrooms in the country, where visual storytelling is integral to the mission.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop polished data visualizations from scratch.
• Collaborate with journalists to conceptualize and create graphics for stories.
• Build charts, maps, and interactive features that enhance storytelling.
• Experiment with innovative forms of visualizations.
• Stay organized and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Requirements

• Experience designing and developing data visualizations using tools such as Datawrapper, Illustrator, or D3.js.
• Fluency in web development, including HTML/CSS and Javascript.
• Understanding of good design principles for clarity and impact.
• Experience with data cleaning or analysis using tools like Excel, Python, or R.
• Strong attention to detail and a passion for creating impactful visuals.
• Ability to translate complex topics clearly and compellingly.

Nice-to-haves

• Familiarity with command line and git.
• Experience working on accountability stories.
