About the position

The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is seeking a Grounds Maintenance Assistant to assist the grounds supervisor in providing technical knowledge and skills in planning, organizing, and directing the maintenance of grounds. This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code §51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. The role requires a valid driver's license and insurability as defined in UTS 157. The position is full-time, requiring 40 hours per week, with standard hours from Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, but flexibility for evenings and weekends is required. The earliest start date is as soon as possible, and the salary is $28,860, commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Park Manager in all aspects of Park operation and maintenance and public outreach.
• Manage vegetation.
• Operate and maintain the water system.
• Monitor resources.
• Install and maintain facilities.
• Operate and maintain equipment.
• Interact with park stakeholders.
• Interpret and assign work order requirements to personnel.
• Perform grounds maintenance work such as pruning, trimming, cavity filling, bracing, and spraying trees and shrubs.
• Mow grass fields using a mower and riding mower.
• Sharpen tools and make minor repairs on equipment.
• Perform preventative maintenance on grounds maintenance equipment.
• Ensure good housekeeping in shop and worksites.
• Perform activities of Groundskeepers I.

Requirements

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
• Three years of experience related to the statement of duties and responsibilities, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to operate light or heavy equipment.
• Irrigator certificate may be required.
