About the position

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) plays a crucial role in supporting the clinical team by providing clerical assistance and facilitating communication between patients, staff, and various departments. This position is responsible for managing patient-related data entry, maintaining medical records, and ensuring efficient operations within the unit. The HUC also serves as a trainer for new hires, ensuring they are onboarded effectively into the role.

Responsibilities

  • Greet visitors and assist them as needed.
  • Keep Clinical manager/staff informed of issues.
  • Meet and greet patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Answer patient call lights promptly and politely.
  • Maintain admit/discharge logs (census cards).
  • Obtain signatures on consent forms for hospital and medical treatment.
  • Make copies of advanced directives for patient charts.
  • Facilitate communication with ancillary departments.
  • Communicate with various departments in a professional manner.
  • Serve as a resource for the location of supplies and medical records.
  • Communicate with physician offices regarding patient records.
  • Adhere to departmental and hospital customer service standards.
  • Call for STATs as needed.
  • Complete consults in Epic appropriately.
  • Timely admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
  • Maintain a manual order entry system according to downtime procedures.
  • Prepare requisitions for services such as maintenance requests.
  • Enter/record unit-based charges as appropriate.
  • Assist physicians with EPIC as needed.
  • Run daily audits/reports from EPIC as directed by the manager.
  • Maintain current and old patient charts.
  • Place forms and results in charts in a timely manner.
  • Copy and retrieve parts of medical records as necessary.
  • Keep all charts in designated order and stuff charts as needed.
  • Monitor and maintain the tube system and office equipment.
  • Order, verify, and put away supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Perform routine maintenance for office equipment.
  • Type and file for the unit (not patient records).
  • Run errands as needed and enter plant maintenance work requisitions.
  • Notify Clinical Engineering for malfunctioning equipment.
  • Serve as a positive role model and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ensure timely and appropriate follow-through of job functions.
  • Participate in unit governance activities and performance improvement activities.
  • Attend in-services and unit meetings or read minutes.
  • Maintain the integrity of unit equipment and assist in patient medical emergencies.
  • Follow the chain of command and complete all unit assignments as requested.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED required.
  • Previous experience as a Health Unit Coordinator for at least 3 years is required for HUC Trainer role.
  • Competent in reading at the 9th grade level and math at the 7th grade level as demonstrated on a nationally normed test.
  • Typing speed of at least 25 words per minute is required.
  • Ability to pass a pre-hire basic computer literacy test is required.
  • Skills with medical terminology preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to work within a team and accept delegated duties.

Nice-to-haves

  • Health Unit Coordinator certification preferred.
  • Certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers preferred.
