About the position

The City of Jacksonville is seeking a Heavy Vehicle Technician Apprentice to join its Fleet Management Division. This apprenticeship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy vehicles. As an apprentice, you will be involved in inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing various types of heavy vehicles, including dump trucks, garbage packers, and buses. The role requires a solid understanding of mechanical systems and the ability to apply techniques and methods used in heavy vehicle repair. You will work under the supervision of experienced technicians, allowing you to learn and develop your skills in a supportive environment. In this position, you will perform preventive maintenance tasks such as changing oil and hoses, troubleshooting electrical systems, and conducting general engine repairs. You will also be responsible for road testing vehicles to ensure repairs have been completed successfully. The work environment is semi-routine, providing some latitude for decision-making while adhering to established procedures. Safety is a priority, and you will be trained in the hazards associated with heavy vehicle repair and the necessary safety practices. Responsibilities

  • Assist the Heavy Vehicle Technician in performing job responsibilities.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair heavy vehicles for mechanical defects.
  • Perform preventive maintenance such as changing oil and hoses on heavy vehicles.
  • Conduct general engine repairs and troubleshoot electrical systems.
  • Perform general mechanical repairs to systems such as fuel, exhaust, cooling, air conditioning, transmission, and front end systems.
  • Road test vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 pounds or more to determine whether repairs have been completed.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems and prepare and maintain records on jobs.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.

Requirements

  • Six months of education and/or experience in the general repair and overhaul of heavy vehicle equipment.
  • Heavy vehicle/diesel technical or trade school degree in progress or general knowledge of heavy vehicle mechanicals with ability to demonstrate is preferred.
  • A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
  • A valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License is required to be obtained within the probation period and maintained during employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used to repair heavy vehicles.
  • Knowledge of standard tools and equipment of the heavy vehicle repair trade.
  • Knowledge of heavy vehicle engine electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and air-operated systems.
  • Knowledge of test equipment including volt-ohm meter, dwell meter, tachometer, micrometer, engine analyzer, and transmission pressure gauge.
