About the position

The Senior Researcher in High-Temperature Materials Processing at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) will lead research and development efforts in high-temperature ceramics and composites. This role involves utilizing advanced processes such as chemical vapor deposition/infiltration (CVD/CVI) and polymer infiltration pyrolysis (PIP) to contribute to significant research activities. The position requires collaboration with industry and other divisions, proposal writing, and a commitment to producing impactful publications while promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility within the workplace.

Responsibilities

  • Lead research projects on high-temperature materials processing as the Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Collaborate with sponsors and team members to achieve project goals and deliverables.
  • Expand the research portfolio through proposal writing and collaborations both internally and externally.
  • Present, report, and publish research results in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain a strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
  • Align behaviors, priorities, and interactions with ORNL's core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service.

Requirements

  • PhD or master's degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 6 years of post-PhD experience or 12 years of post-master's experience.
  • Expertise in high-temperature ceramic, alloy, and composite processing.
  • Proven leadership in developing and running research programs and establishing multi-organizational collaborations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and infiltration (CVI).
  • Experience in polymer infiltration pyrolysis (PIP) and reactive melt infiltration of ceramic composites.
  • Excellent record of productive and creative research as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and patents.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and participate creatively in collaborative teams.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment and adapt to changing needs.
