The Highway Maintainer position at Tazewell County/Morton Yard involves a variety of tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of roads, bridges, and other related structures and features. This role is essential for ensuring the safety and functionality of transportation infrastructure in the region. The successful candidate will operate vehicles that require a Class A Commercial Driver's License and will be responsible for performing labor related to roadway maintenance. This includes assisting in snow and ice control during adverse weather conditions, maintaining roadside and right-of-way areas, and performing routine housekeeping duties at the headquarters. The position also entails the removal and disposal of trash, dead animals, and other debris along highways, as well as maintaining on-the-job records. The Highway Maintainer will be expected to perform other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the job description. Candidates must possess a Class A CDL with appropriate endorsements, including X or N, and must have at least one year of driving experience immediately preceding their appointment, free of incidents that could result in license suspension or revocation. The position requires the ability to perform arduous labor outdoors in various adverse conditions, including extreme temperatures, wet and muddy environments, and active construction sites. Employees must be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions while maintaining productive working relationships. This role is classified as medium work, which involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time and frequently lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Operations employees are subject to call at any hour of the day or night to respond to emergencies outside of normal work hours, and reasonable amounts of overtime may be required. The work hours are from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with the possibility of flexible scheduling.
